The Tugendhat House in Brno(Brünn) by Mies van der Rohe

Vortrag bei der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Sprache und Kultur Cheltenham, 17. Mai 2024 um 19:00, Michael Kozdon

"Architectural purity, interconnection of interior and exterior, timeless technical equipment, noble and exotic materials and, above all, a high level of preservation – these are the main attributes that led to Villa Tugendhat being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.

Villa Tugendhat was built in 1929–1930 for Greta and Fritz Tugendhat to a design by the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Its history is at least as fascinating as its cultural significance. Discover the story of this iconic house!"

Michael Kozdon writes:

"This is a story about a unique building built for an exceptional client by one of the most influential architects during a highly significant time in European history.

The story was motivated by my personal connection with the Tugendhat house which may have inspired me to become an architect. It is also the story of my family’s connection with the house in the early 1930s when it was built. Since it was built, almost 100 years ago, it has only been occupied as a ‘house’ for 7 years. It is now a World Heritage monument.

The story is about the architect, Mies van de Rohe, the client, Greta Tugendhat and the period of intensive creativity in the arts just before National Socialism.

The story is about the house itself and why I believe that nothing like it has ever been built before and probably will never be built in the future."
